Do I really need to charge my new battery for 12 hours?

I got a new extended battery for my Epic 4G from Hyperion. Its instructions say that I should charge the battery for at least 12 hours before I start to decharge it. Do I really need to do this? It's full after a couple hours or charging. Do I really need to have it charging at full for another 10 hours?

Instructions also say that for best performance I should discharge it completely and recharge it 5 times.

If it's Li-ion it shouldn't matter. In fact Li-ion batteries are at less risk not to fully decharge. Technically a Li-ion battery dies if they lose their full charge, which the phone prevents from happening for the most part. Also, Li-ion has no memory effect, so full recharges don't matter.

The one thing I would do is download a app called BatteryCalibration. Most apps are useless for battery life but if you are changing batteries this is a good one. It wipes the battery statistics and rebuilds the file with the new battery. Not needed, but it helps the phone know how much charge the battery has. It only needs to be used once. Like I say...not needed because eventually it adjusts to it, but I find it helpful.

According to specs, if it is the 3500 mah extended life Hyperion, it is Li-Ion.

If you are referring to the battery stats file that you can wipe in clockwork mod, a Google engineer has stated that that file has nothing to do with battery life.
I'm not sure what that app does so I may be wrong. Just mentioning as fyi.

Yeah I know you can do it in CWM, it was simply a easy way to do it for those who don't have CWM. I don't believe that either from that google person. I can say 100% that my phone if I don't wipe those stats after swapping ROMs that my battery life blows until I do. In fact I just swapped ICS ROMs yesterday, only got 12 hours and couldnt figure it out. Wiped stats, did a charge/discharge and now it went 24 no problem yesterday. Though my opinion on the matter is it's a mix of things. I swapped ROMs at 30% and the CWM install script wiped battery stats at 30% which prob caused it to recreate /w odd values until I rewiped it.
