Do I really need the alpha pal8045

I have 1ghz athlon w/ a cheap orb fan. I need something quieter. I keep reading that the alpha is the best choice for cooling and less noise. But is this my only option and do I really need it?, especially if I'm not overclocking.

Yes, it is your only option even if you don't overclock. It's SOOOOO quiet with Panaflo or Pabst fan, I don't think anything can compare to it. If you were willing to accept a noisy fan, you'd have many more options open; however, for a very quiet operation, PAL8045 is your only choice. IMHO.

I agree with LukFilm However your board must support it. Look Here to see if your motherboard is listed. I will tell you that this HS has made a huge difference in the case noise I once had to endure. I am even looking at ways to attach a 92mm fan on it! Just make sure that that fan is set to suck from the HS.

You could probably get by with a $25 Alpha PAL6035 with ~23CFM Sunon fan from www.2cooltek. I used one on my bro's 1.2gHz tbird and temps were decent. Of course, it has long since been replaced by a PAL8045 :D

Newegg has the Alpha PAL8045 for $35 + $6 for shipping = $41. Quick glance at pricewatch shows the same item for $35 + $5 shipping (no limit) at hardcorecooling.com. I've never ordered anything from hardcorecooling, but if you live in California (like me) it'll save you a buck plus about $2.89 in tax. $4 cheaper if you're in California. Of course, if you aren't, I'd just buy from Newegg. Unfortunetly hardcorecooling.com doesn't have any Panaflo fans, which would make it a sweet deal because then you wouldn't have to pay for shipping again from a different place.

The Alpha is not just for overclocking. I have a friend that just put one in his rig. He wanted ultra quiet with adequate cooling. He is very happy. He has a 1.2 T-bird and does not overclock.

Yes. The only pain to the Alpha is that you have to remove the mobo, install the standoffs, then screw the damn thing on without smearing Arctic Silver (or your thermal grease) everywhere. Took me the better part of a half-hour.

It takes about 10-15 mins to install an Alpha PAL8045 if you have the mobo out of the case. Depenind on how many components you have and how messy your case is, you can easily take upto an hour installing the PAL8045 :)

Tip: if you want to easily remove the PAL8045 for future CPU upgrades or reapplication of the thermal compound, you can use Loctite thread locker or superglue to adhere the nylon nut to the back of your mobo and the hex screw to the nut so its easy to remove the PAL8045 without removing your mobo.

Did I mention the installation of a PAL6035 is really easy? :D

Really don't know which orb cooler you're using, or what the noise specs might be, other than overly optimistic- Tt seems to stretch the truth more than a little.

Check out the Alpha 6035 w/ SanyoDenki fan from KDComputers.com. This is about as quiet as aftermarket clip-on units get.

You may be able to use an even quieter fan with a good sink like the 6035 or a 760092 Taisol, it's just difficult to recommend anything less. Some members (Ausone?) have reported good results with fans having 2/3 the airflow of the SanyoDenki, I haven't tried it. The SanyoDenki's are almost inaudible to me, so I quit right there....

Im using a SVC gg68 with 80mm 28db fan for 15 bux. Fan is quiter than any 60mm fans and Cpu temp is at 42 under normal load. Since alpha uses GG69 uses same size fan as alpha, you can drop in and pepst fan here and bring the noise down as well under half the price for alpha.

I know Alpha is a great heatsink and i recommend it but I also want to show you the cost point of view.

I realize that your not going to overclock and although Alpha will give you good cooling under low noise, plunking $50 for heat/sink fan might be difficult for some people.

I have both the 8045 and the SVC GC68. I must say, I hooked up the GC68 yesterday and am VERY impressed with it. $16 and change shipped and it dropped my full load (SETI for TEAM ANANDTECH) from 47c to 42 and is super quiet. After putting an L1A on my 8045, my temps is in the 47c range, so I am gonna take it off this weekend and reapply my ASII and possibly go with a slightly more powerful Sunon on top of it.

So will this SVC GC68 keep my 1ghz cool enough if I replaced the fan it comes w/, w/ a panaflo L1? As far as I can tell the fan it comes w/ is a decible less than what my orb is rated.

I still have 2-3 L1A's left over that I havent used yet. I inteded to put one on the GC68 after installing it last nite, but to be honest, I didnt notice that much of a difference if any at all with the 30cfm fan that came with the GC68. I think you will be perfectly fine with the fan it comes with as far as cooling and noise go. Try it with the fan it comes with 1st, you can always slap an L1A on it if you feel it is absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the info. One more quick question.... How often if at all do you guys clean up and reapply the thermal grease? Do you even do so, or do you do it the first time and thats it?

First time and that's it for me. Unless you remove the HS then re do. Plus the Alpha is such a pain in the butt to remove I just don't feel like doing it. I have also read that ASII does not dry up.

Oh, one more thing. DON'T go by what the Orb fan is rated at, TT is NOTORIOUS for underrating theird db and overrating their CFM's. I can assure you the 30cfm fan it comes with is VERY quiet.

The MB needs to have the holes around the socket/chipset.
Thats not entirely true, I had a asus a7a266 that has holes around the socket but a pal8045 doesn't fit on it.
