Do I really need more than 256MB of PC133??

It is so tempting to buy a stick of 256MB Crucial Cas2 PC133 for $47 shipped. I already have 256MB of Mushkin. My motive at this point is purely to see 512MB post and obviously the low cost. I plan to upgrade to XP the day it hits the shelves and I do plan to upgrade the CPU and Mobo in the next 9-12 months. It is highly likely that my new cpu/mobo will not accept PC133 and I will be looking at DDR or Rambus. I do use photoshop and I do some video edtiing, but I have not noticed any severe lag or swapping. I also am a casual gamer and an MP3 fanatic. Those are pretty much the uses of my Win98SE system.

So, $50 is $50 and it seems so stupid to throw away $50 for 9-12 months if I will not see an improvement. Of course, if going over 256MB will have some impact, I would most likely go for it.

Comments? What would you do?

Thanks,

LJ

the more ram the better fill all your slots 768MB because you'll need it with xp and any software you want to run.

I really dont see any advantage right now to you getting more ram!
If your upgrading your system and do not think that it will support 133sdram dont bother.
WinXP will probably utilize more than 256 megs of ram but 98 will not.
I would hold off if I were you.

I realize XP will utlize more than 256MB, but will it need to for my normal computing tasks. I could see going from 128MB to 256MB upon upgrading to XP, but more than 256MB??

i think ram prices are pretty much as low as they're gonna get... if you have an extra 50 bucks that you cant spend on anything else on your comp worth getting, id say go for it :)

In win2k 256 to 512 did make a noticable difference, and it only cost me $42.

Naw, you dont need anymore ram right now. XP will still run decently with 256 and by the time XP is released in October we should see the updated P4 on the streets at a decent prices. Also pointing your Photoshop scratch file to another hardrive will help you in performance when handling large image files.

Thanks all. Just looking for something to mess with. Haven't changed anything drastically in a while (with the exception of adding a new big hdd - thanks Rain:)) and have the fever to do something.

On the PIV, I am doing the same as you Rain, waiting for the cream of the crop in the line to appear (2ghz?) and then moving forward with a new motherboard and ram. The T-Bird/DDR deal is so tempting and cheap, but VIA chipsets scare me.
