*RossMAN- I checked the providers in my area:

Comcast $42.95 with cable service. $52.00 without cable service

DirecWav $52.95 satellite

don't go direcwav btw. satellite sux.

comcast is decent, if you are in the Northeast, Comcast is way better than Verizon DSL, but i think verizon might be a bit cheaper.

if your going price get verizon, unless you already have cable of course in which case it will be pretty close in price.

Given your choices I would either go with Comcast or just don't get broadband.

Dial up works for you now and your choices are really limited, so I would not get broadband.

if you get verizon dSL in your area, its 30$ per month, first month free, modem is provided free of charge, there are no start up charges. if you say that you don tuse the internet that often, then why buy router+and stuff to hook up other computers? you can get a router for 50 bux, and NICs are 10$ each. how can that add up to 200$?

I play a lot of games online and let me tell you, it is much much much more fun to play with a ping of 50-100 instead of 250-350. So for me, it is definitely not a status thing.

I also download a lot of stuff.
Downloading 3 Redhat iso's at 650MB each would have been nearly impossible on dial-up. On cable it was a couple of hours instead of like 3 days.
Downloading the 150MB patch for my game would have taken like 8 hours on dial-up. On cable I think it took 15 minutes.

Not to mention the instant page loads instead of waiting 20 or 30 seconds for some websites to come up.

It depends on your use, but for me, it is definitely worth it, and I would never ever go back. I just bought a house, but before I made the offer, I checked to make sure cable or dsl were available in that area. If they hadn't been, I would not have bought the house.

Satellite does not suck, you're an idiot. Do you even have or ever used a decent sat. link? I have StarBand and I'm extremely satisfied. Of course, it also has better downloads, better reliablity, etc. than DirecWay, plus no stupid 160 MB F.A.P.

(why is the word F@P filtered???? I don't get it)

LS20 - I agree but unfortunately it appears Verizon DSL is not an option in his area.

WarmAndSCSI - F@P is a banned word here, long story but F@P has to do with spanking one's monkey.

I would say yes b/c extra line + unlim calling time + access charges for current dial up should be close to $20-$25 - the extra $10 is justified in time saved waiting and waiting every month.

porn is not the main reason "most" people get broadband..

unbeknownst to most of you kids..those of us who own homes typically have more than one person living there,
and more than one person who wants to get on the internet.

hence routers and broadband to service the needs/wants of the house.

i've got 5 people who not infrequently are ALL one the net at the same time..how you gonna
do that with a dialup service?

if i was alone, a 56k service would be bearable..but heck, what i have now is cheaper than dialup (got a phone/internet/cable tv package)!

bets of both worlds...

Satellite is SUCK, Verison is SUCK and WarmandSCSI is SUCK.

How would broadband be a status symbol now? Unless you have a T3 or higher piped into your house, broadband is very common and cheap, it is hardly a status item. No more so than cable tv would be. Now about five years ago, one could probably have some sort of bragging rights if they had BB. But now, no.

Satellite may suck or may not.
It depends on what you are using it for.

If you are downloading a bunch of stuff, you can get pretty high speeds and satellite would work well.
If you want to host any kind of server, satellite sucks.
If you want to play any games, forget it. They will be totally unplayable on satellite.

The speeds can be quite high, but the latency is always huge.
Averages anywhere from 400-500 for one-way systems and 800-1200 or higher for 2-way systems.

I have to use dial up on my laptop at work and I find it painful. Barring some major financial catastrophe there is no way I would give up broadband.
