DO I really have to install a JDK just to root a phone?

Ok, installing an Android SDK to root an old phone for fun and learning etc...
Upon installing SDK, it say I have to install Java Developement Kit not found.
Ok, so I download that, and install it.
I go back and run the SDK, and it says JDK not found.
SO, I re-boot, and then try to install SDK.
It says JDK not found.
Ok, do I have to register JDK first?
Registration is a bit much requiring me to say what buisness etc...
The problem is I am not some sort of IT buisness with a reason to register JDK...
What am I missing?

However, rooting keeps failing.

You should think about using a LiveCD, much easier to get going - especially for Win7 users.
