Do I pull the trigger on a GTX 1080 for less than MSRP?

I've tentatively said yes to a BNIB open-air cooled GTX 1080 from a forum seller on another site for $540 (no GoW4 game code, though). However I won't be assembling a rig until Black Friday / Cyber Monday. Even still, I don't think I'll get that good of a deal on a 1080, given that most custom AIB models are $620+ right now. And given that used 980 TI's are going for ~$320, I don't think the 1070 at $400 + GoW4 is that particularly appealing outside of it's power use.

I had myself convinced I was skipping Vega/Pascal and was ready to repurchase a used GTX 980 or was going to try to snag an open boxed 1060 6gb/480 8gb for ~$200, however for less than the price of the GTX 980 when it first came out, double the vram and 80% more performance, $540 is reeally tempting since I game at 1440p and plan on getting a VR headset either sometime next year or when 2nd gen versions hit (depending on rumors, specs, etc.)

What do you guys think? Get it and be happy for 2 years or stick to the plan and get something significantly slower to tide me over until Volta/Navi? FYI, I was planning to get the 2nd tier GV104 (GTX 1170) or AMD equivalent when those cards were to come out.

If you are going for 1440p then you will want a 1080 as even the 1070 has issues on a lot of games and with vega being a good 6-8 months away there is not much else to pick or go for.

I would be careful with used 980 ti's these days especially for only $60ish less then a new 1070 when that outperforms the 980 ti's if you can find them for $320 used.
