Do I need XP for 64 bits on AMD?

I already have XP Pro on a P3 1GHz computer but I'm building a new rig with an AMD64 3200+. This is a single core proc not the X2, so my question is whether I need to buy a new OS or if my regular XP Pro will do the trick.

Is there any advantage the 64 bit version of Windows XP has? What is everybody else using as an OS with their 64 bit processors?

Don't use it. It is only faster with 64bit programs, which are rare right now. IIRC, the only game out now that uses 64bits is far cry. Plus, you're likely to run into a lot of driver issues since a lot of companies haven't release decent 64 bit drivers yet. I don't think it's possible to run my hauppage tv tuner in 64 bit windows at all. Just stick with the regular 32 bit version of XP for now.

I agree that one should wait for more 64 bit programs to be available. A lot of 32's haven't come out yet with their 64 upgrades.

If you're doing certain programs that will work on x64, then go for it, Remember, you may have a lot of tweaking to find all the necessary drivers for your hardware.

Really, you may really be frustrated unless you have the patience.

You will most likely have to flash your bios, go to the mobo website to download drivers and if its a AMD, PlanetAMD64

Well, you be the judge. If you're happy with your 32bit system, don't aggravate yourself with the x64. Wait a year....

UT2004 is now also 64bits just FYI. Although I still dont think that makes 64bit windows worth it just yet. I dont run windows, but if I did, I would run 32bit xp.
