I'd imagine the Voodoo would hold up a lot better in 2007 than an... umm... 386? would hold up in 1997 though. You're not playing Quake 2 on that, that's for sure.

Seriously though, as everyone has mentioned buying a 1080 is a bad choice for the long term. Even ignoring the benefit of keeping cash on hand, spending 200-250 couple years and selling for 100-150 will provide a much more consistent long term strategy than buying the top end.

The GTX 460 was $230 and gave better performance than a $650 GTX 280 two years later
The GTX 660 was $230 and gave the same performance at launch as the $499 GTX 480 two years later
The GTX 960 was $200 and gave close the the same performance at the $500 GTX 680 two and a half years later.

I'd say that by the 1080FE's two year anniversary there's a good chance you could be enjoying 1080 performance at the $250 price point.
