Do I need to turn off Avg. when....

Do I need to turn off Avg. antivirus scanner when I download drivers or do a scan and defrag. with windows XPpro? I read somewhere that if an antivirus scanner is running in the background when drivers are downloaded, that the driver might or will become corrupted.
My scan and defrag. is not complaining when run with Avg. in the background. Yet, I'm wondering if it would alert me if a problem did arise. Under what, if any, circumstances would I need to turn off the Avg.? And if need be, how do I turn it off temporarily?

thanks for your help

I don`t normally turn it off when I download drivers,if you do turn it off you can always scan the drivers for viruses by going to the directory you downloaded them to & right clicking over them with the mouse and select "scan with AVG" ,as for defrag I normally turn my AVG off & renable it after the defrag is complete. When I do a scan I leave my AVG on.

Btw some companies like Nvidia recommend you turn off anti-virus during installation of their drivers.

To turn it off just right click on AVG icon taskbar near the clock and select "shutdown AVG control centre".

To turn it back on find AVG control centre in your menu and click on it.

Update :my post has been corrected(thanks to Workin')for spotting my error.

They recommend turning off anti-virus during driver installation, not download.

The only time I turn off AVG is when installing new Nvidia drivers. Otherwise it is on all the time and I have never had a problem, even installing drivers for other stuff like my Audigy sound card, Realtek network card, or Adaptec SCSI card, or any software application package.

Ooops I was thinking of Download acceleration programs like DAP,[/i] >>

Installation Hints:

"Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.
Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.[/i] >>

But you`re right 😉.

🙂

I didn't mean to nitpick, but I believe that the less time you are exposed to virus infection the better. And everyone hates to download infected files.

Never saw the point to "download accelerator" programs, they never seemed to help when I was on dialup, now on cable I don't need acceleration 😉 They always seem to cause more trouble than they are worth.
