Do I need to shut down?

Do I need to shut down my laptop when I carry it from hom to office etc? or is standby mode OK? Will there be any damage to the HDD if there is a jolt while in standby mode?

Standby mode powers down the HD, so that would be safe - however, I'd be more concerned with the fact that in standby, the system is still on and producing appreciable heat. Closing it up in a laptop bag would be suicide.

Just shut it off or hibernate it. 🙂

depends on your laptop, my compal CL-56 doesnt put off much heat, i just close the lid, and walk from class to my next one, i rarely turn that sucker off, let alone reboot it. Its good to let the battery lose its charge every few weeks rather then let it be full charge plugged in 24/7

Thanks for the replies. Even when I do shut down the laptop remains quite hot, is it OK to put it directly into a case?

Is that true anymore, with the introduction technology of Li-ION batteries I didin't think the batteries need to be drained and charged fully to retain the charge. As far as I have ever understood it was just Ni-CD batteries were the only ones with the battery that allow the problems from not discharging completely or charging completely. Correct me if I'm wrong though, as I would really like an explanation if there is any information I left out or was incorrect on 🙂
