I'm going to watch the new Alice in Wonderland movie this evening. As I understand it, this is not a remake of the original but rather a sequel to it. My question is, do I need to watch the original Alice in Wonderland movie before watching this new one? I'm afraid I might miss some references or not understand parts of the movie if I don't see the original first. Any thoughts?

Oh also, are there recommendations on which adapation/version of the original Alice in Wonderland I should see then? Should I stick with the Disney cartoon version or another one?

I've only seen the first 30 minutes of it, but it looked to be a pretty close remake of the original. By no means is it a sequel.

I would certainly suggest watching the 1951 version first, though.

just as a cultural reference point you should watch the original:p

I definitely plan to at some point. I was never really into watching scifi or fantasy while I was growing up but I've changed my ways since. :)

It's not a sequel, it's just Tim Burton's twist on the original. I'd still see the old version too just to use as a reference.

According to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014759/, they say: "19-year-old Alice returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen's reign of terror. "

From the sounds of this, it sounds like a sequel to me. That is unless the original Alice in Wonderland was about her returning to Wonderland.

You need to watch the original just because.

It makes the new one better, but the new one never lives up to the original I must say.

It's a sequel, also ...

You could just hop on over to your local library and read the book.

Don't see the Disney movie. That movie was TERRIBLE. It hurt to watch it.

You should just read the book, as it beats any of the media remakes. Hope you aren't scared of reading..
