Do I need to return my old license plates on my car? *UPDATE*

JEDI

I got rid of my car. I still have the plates.

What would happen if i kept the plates instead of returning them to the DMV?

update:
ok, i decided to turn in my plates. the lady behind he counter said that if i didnt turn them in, my license would be suspended when my plates expired. (Virginia)

it varies from state to state

i think i had to turn them in in NY

GA doesn't care, i kept them

depends on if the plates are tracked by the person or vehicle

some states you transfer the plate when you transfer the title

if you still have it, just keep it. no body will care. new plates are likely already issued to the car you sold anyways.

I am not aware of Micronesia's laws so I can't help.
You should contact your governor's office.

It's easy to keep 'em. I had a sweet personalized plate (NC) and sold the car. I told the DMV to list them as "lost or stolen". She then said "You're set, hang it up wherever you want! 😉"
