Do I need to reinstall Windows XP??

This may be a dumb question but for all I know about computers I have no idea as to the answer

I just built a new computer Dell P4 2.2GHZ to a Intel E4400. Everythings totally new.

I am assuming I need a fresh install of windows... But my question is whether I can just take my old HD and plug it in the new comp then go about changing drivers hardware ect.

Ugh now that I think about this it might be more trouble than its worth.

I am getting a new HD in a couple months and wanted to go this route in the interm.

Can I? Should I?

Thanks

If your copy of XP came from Dell, then it's not licensed to be moved to a new computer. Also, if you DO move it, you'll need to do a "Repair Install", which, essentially, is a re-install. The only difference is that your current data and program installations stay intact.

Be advised that a "Repair Install" is a major operation. Any important data should be backed up on another hard drive before proceeding.

I have moved HDs from 1 identical Dell model # to another one and it still tried to force me to reactivate with MS as the MAC/Serial#s are diff on the components. MS didn't find it funny at all and I couldn't convince them to activate it, they couldn't anyways. A new install is a better idea IMO.

Apart from driver issues it is good practice to do a fresh install on a new machine.

I also do a image afterwards so that I can recover without having to do a complete install.
