Do I need to pay import tax if my parents send me a netbook when I'm studying abroad?

I'm studying abroad for a semester in New Zealand. Would I have to pay an extra fee for customs if my parents send me a netbook from the U.S.?

If it's insured (and, you'd be an idiot not to) the item is specified and you will need to pay import duty. The only way around it is if someone brings it to you.

From everything I understand, it is a major pain in the ass not to simply carry it with you on the plane. If it is only a semester and you are there already, I recommend doing without and enjoying New Zealand without the laptop. If you aren't there, find a way to bring it with you.

You can't claim it's a gift?

You still have to pay import duty.

What if they're just sending it to him as something he already owns? (serious question) It seems kind of bogus. Like if he forgot a pair of shoes and they shipped them to him.

Unless they claim it as new, you wont have to pay any import duties on it.

My laptop got stolen while I was in NZ, and I had to get a new one shipped over. Didn't claim it as new, no duties paid.

No point getting on there either as they are like 2 or 3 times the price they would be anywhere else in the world.
