Do i need to buy a displayport cable to run my 1440p monitor @ 75hz Radeon Freesync?

The above is currently what i have. I'm having lots of trouble getting AMD Freesync 75hz to work. In my windows setting, its only allowing me to set it to 60z. Is it because i currently only have it connected via the HDMI cable it came with? I've turned on Freesync in the Monitor's OSD settings using the buttons on the screen.

Radeon Settings:
-GPU Scaling: Off
-Scaling Mode: Full Panel
-HDMI Link Assurance: On
-Color Depth: 8bpc
-Pixel Format RGB 4:4:4 (Full RGB)

Any tips on how to get AMD Freesync working @ 75hz?

The only game i play is CSGO, is there even a benefit to this?

I think FreeSync (not FreeSync 2) on older cards and Displays does require using DisplayPort.

Pretty sure Freesync support didn't start until the R7/R9 200 series.

Your HD 7950 is simply too old.

Well, according to wiki at least, Freesync support started with sea islands GPUs in 2013 which were the 200 series cards.

Your HD 7950 is from 2012, Southern islands, and at least according to wiki, is not supported.

Note that getting FreeSync to work, and getting a 75Hz setting to work in Windows, are separate things, but you might require DisplayPort for both.

You will likely need the display port cable for freesync, as well as possibly having to enable it in the monitors menus. 75 hz should run with either hdmi or dp
Would it be possible to flash the card to get freesync?

You should be able to enable non-freesync 75hz

And yes, there is a difference between 60hz and 75hz for CSGO, but it's not nearly as significant as 60hz to 120 or 144hz.

60hz is 16.666ms per frame
75hz is 13.333ms per frame
144hz is 6.9ms per frame

Freesync is adaptive refresh rate. High refresh rates on monitors have been around far longer than adaptive sync technologies like Freesync and G-Sync.

So instead of locked at a steady 60hz, or 75hz, or 144hz, it can be adjusted on the fly to SYNC with your game's framerate.

So if you're playing a game and the FPS drops to 50fps, your monitors refresh rate will drop to 50hz to match the framerate of the game. This has the advantage of reducing screen tearing.

So you can buy a 75hz, or 144hz monitor, run it at it's full refresh rate and not enable freesync at all, it just means that in games where your performance drops BELOW your refresh rate, you'll get pretty bad screen tearing. But in games like counter strike, where you're usually gonna be running at 100+fps on most modern hardware, it's ALWAYS above the 75hz refresh rate of your monitor, so there should really be no need to use freesync for a game like counter strike anyway.

AAA titles with high-end graphics are going to be your biggest issue since many of those games will dip far below 75hz with only an HD 7950.

But i'm having trouble setting my Windows & Radeon settings to 75hz. On my monitor's OSD i have Freesync turned on.
In my Windows display settings, It says:

Desktop resolution: 2560 x 1440
Refresh rate (Hz): 60 Hz
Bit Depth: 8-bit
Color Format: RDB
Color Space: Standard Dynamic Range (SDR)

When i click on Display adapter properties for Display 1 it says: (Monitor)

Screen Refresh Rate: 60 Hertz

Radeon Settings Currently:

Radeon Freesync: Not Supported
GPU Scaling: Off (what does this do??)
Scaling Mode: Full Panel
HDMI Link Assurance: Off
Color Depth: 8 bpc
Pizel Format: RBG 4:4:4 Pixel Format (Full RBG)

I'd try turning the Freesync off on the monitor OSD, since you can't use it.

And I haven't used an AMD GPU in several years, so not sure where you can set it there (or even if you can) with Nvidia you can just select it from a drop down in the display resolution area.

But you should also be able to select it in the Microsoft advanced display settings if nothing else.

^^ let me try again when i get home from work. thats exactly what i don't have, the options to select anything other than 60hz in the dropdown in the "Monitor" tab. You don't think it has to do with the connection from the video card to monitor being HDMI, right? Used the included HDMI cable w/ the monitor.
