I have a 22" wide at home that I don't use as much, I would like to swap it with my 19" at work because I feel like it makes sense . Would you think it's cool... no big deal, or must have permission ?

Let me add, that it is a small corp. with maybe a dozen direct employees.

It depends on company policy.

Edit for your edit: It should be okay but I never bring anything into work that I'm not comfortable losing.

What do you mean by swap? I don't think it would be okay to bring home the 19" monitor after you've brought the 22" to work. It should be fine to just bring in your own monitor, though.

You shouldn't have to ask for permission, but you should notify your boss or someone that it is YOUR monitor at work, that way if you have to quit your job for whatever reason they won't try to keep your monitor.

Yeah I don't know what the policy is. I mean I am thinking of it as if I chose a laptop over a desktop, I would bring my computer home with me all the time.... like everyone else.

I mean it is a small company and it would be obvious that is not theirs... I am thinking my boss will just notice and if he asks ... I would say yes I exchanged them.

The thing is if you didn't ask before swapping, it's no different than stealing. It doesn't matter if you bring in a monitor from home that's 10x bigger.

I would definitely ask. It looks shady otherwise, even if it appears perfectly reasonable.

I do work from home often, and sometimes I take the whole thing home. Everyone at work take they laptops home, I just happen to prefer to have a desktop at work.
But in most situations, yeah it is stealing.

hahaha...lol like anyone would care.

and I'd laugh if you got fired one day and then tried to tell them that that 22" monitor on your desk is actually yours....

Absolutely not.

If you work for a large company (fortune 500) your boss likely does not have the authority to make this decision.

You must gain permission from the IT Procurement department in charge of inventory. Your company may have a policy against bringing foreign hardware (of any kind, monitor or otherwise) into their infrastructure.

Edit: I see your mentioning it being a small company - speak to the IT Director.

I installed extra Ram, a dual display card and stole an extra monitro from an unused workstation and nobody ever said anything.

It's a large corporation, but very laid back. I'm in IT and I know the corporate IT people, they don't care...

Well, since there is no IT department. I just fix whatever breaks, or call some contractor to come fix it. I would be that same person, I am in charge of the hardware too (I am the only one that keeps track of anything really)

I say no, only because I have to stick with my shitty 17" CRT at work, so you should not be able to upgrade either.

sorry mang

edit: must be nice to have 22" monitors layin' around ;)

You need to ask permission from your boss, aside from protecting yourself from theft accusations,if you bring in an unauthorized piece of electronic equipment and place it on their network and anything happens on the network, anything at all you got problems. Most places require a sticker placed on new stuff stating it was inspected/found safe before putting it to work.
