Do I need the original remote?

I have a "new to me" 27" Toshiba 27a51 that works as far as I can tell. However, it didn't come with the original remote, and I'm having issues programming a universal remote for it, so I'm really not sure if it's fully functional. I've found the TV is discontinued, the remote's product number is AD300865, and it looks like it's $20 to replace.

I've played around with IR codes and found one that seems to work everything right except for the menu, I can access it but can't scroll up and down the list of functions, and when I press input it shows me what I'm using (cable), but won't switch to S-video (which I had my laptop plugged into at the time).



Do I need to find an original remote, or am I just missing something here?

Remote codes are a tricky bunch, though if you get a Logitech Harmony remote you'll save yourself a lot of trouble. Those things have accurate codes for pretty much anything that uses an IR remote.

Logitech universal remotes are great. I bought a used one off of ebay for about $60 a year or two ago. The entire setup is done through your computer. I have it controlling a 10-year-old VCR that I had lost the remote to.

:laugh: considering I got the TV for $75 off of craigslist I don't think I'll be buying any $60 remotes.

So, it seems remotes are just a real pain to replace, where's a good place to look for an original? I mean I've already found it online, but a recommendation on a good place would still be great.

And I don't want to assume too much, are all remotes of the same model interchangeable?

This place has your replacement remote for $19.50. You'll have to search by the part # of the remote. The Toshiba Miracle Remote listed lower on that page is $15 and might work with your TV. I couldn't find anything on ebay or Amazon. Google turned up quite a few results though.
