Do I need the CAS2? Do I need DDR400?

Hello again,

I am interested in overclocking an Athlon XP 2400+ on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe (NForce2) motherboard. I've convinced myself that I must get sticks of CAS2 PC3200 memory? I've been looking at:

OCZ OCZ400512R2 PC3200 CAS2
Corsair CMX512-3200C2 CAS2
GeIL GL5123200U CAS2

1. In an effort to save money, do I need the DDR400 or will I have good success with a PC2700 (DDR333) chip. How would this limit me?

2. CAS2 allows more aggressive timings. How much performance gain will I really see with it? Shouls I just get a nie Corsair PC2700 CAS 2.5 with a heat spreader?

Help and Thanks,
Matrixxx

id get atleast pc3200 because you can lock pci/agp in spec, therefore really pump up the fsb on the cpu (and lower the mult)

you dont really need cas2, the difference isnt much imo (the latency only affects the first cycle anyways)

Corsair all the way. Stay away from that OCZ stuff. They have soiled their reputation over the past year or so, producing crap, basically. The Geil stuff, I have no idea about. Corsair is a proven company and handles their own RMAs. They are prompt and curteous.

For "regular ram" i.e. PC2100/2700, Crucial (Micron) all the way. The overclocking stuff, Corsair all the way. HTH.

If you want tried and true for high speeds, go Corsair. Crucial has been THE company for reliability and service concerning PC2100 and 2700 modules. If you want to risk your money, try OCZ or Geil. If I had to pick between the two, I'd have to say Geil over OCZ, even though both of 'em are pretty disliked by most people in this section of the forums.

We're on the same page. But you said it better than I did. :) Only one cup of coffee so far.

id pick up the corsair, since the price difference isnt that bad right now.

its 150$ for 1 stick of ocz 512mb pc3200
its 165$ for 1 stick of corsair 512mb pc3200.
its 169$ for 1 stick of giel 512 mb pc3200.

they also have the new twinx memory, and low latency from corsair out now. but you pay a premium as i thought you would. it ranges from 30-45$ more for the low latency, and the twinx. this is all priced at www.googlegear.com,as its about 10% cheaper then newegg for memory.

Not to be stubborn, but, I have heard better things about the brand OCZ versus the store OCZ from hardware reviews on their new memory. I hope this marks a change. I am leaning toward the Corsair because it will probably be easier to resell later when I'm ready to upgrade again.

Thanks,
