Do i need multiple IP's with comcast?

Im moving from a region that uses Cox Cable as my ISP to one that uses Comcast...

On Cox, they have never cared if you use a router or anything to split your signal among your computers... Comcast however mentions multiple IP addresses....

Do i need multiple IP addys? I cant even figure out why i would need multiple ones... I've never had a problem using 1 for all my rigs...

I have multiple IP addresses without asking for them, I just split the signal on my hub... is this something thats going to bite me later?

Comcast doesn't care what you do on your end, as long as you're not taking bandwidth away from someone else.

Used to be ATT would get on your case if you had a router, and refused to service you. I had a CS guy accuse me of being a "liar" and "hiding things" when I told him I had a router. So many people use them they gave up on that tactic.

i am using a router with comcast to hook up 6 computers, and comcast hasn't said anything to us yet.

Aphex, Will the cable installer (Cox)set up both PC's? Reason Im asking is I have all the hardware (2 pc's,router and cable modem, and next week there coming out to install. I was wondering if they will set up both PC's or just one. Thanks for your answer.

Here is the deal.

Router needs 1 'public' ip address, and will allow literally thousands of 'private' ip addresses. comcast will not set up your router / extra computers unless you pay them lots extra and buy the equipment from them.

If for some reason you want to have another 'public' IP address (i run a web/email server on one of mine for example, or if you wanted to run a game server, or maybe you're too lazy to setup a router and want to use a switch/hub instead), comcast will provide them at 4.95 a month. At least in my area, if i'm only paying for 1 IP and i try to get a second IP from their DHCP server, the first IP address will stop working, and the second will work fine. This is not the case in all areas, however. At school I can pull 8 simultaneous IP's and am only paying for 1. I've been doing this for a while, no bill has ever showed up or anything like that. Bandwidth is still limited to 1.7mbit/sec per cable modem though, no matter how many IP's you have going thru it.

Comcast has absolutely no way of distinguishing the difference between a single machine and a router with multiple machines behind it. To them, 1 'public' IP == 1 Machine connected to the internet.
