Do I need Internet to Use Slingbox strictly for home use?

My sister is interested in getting a Slingbox and came to me asking if she needed an internet connection to use if she just wanted it for home use, no outside access to her TV.

Her plan is to watch shows on her Laptop where ever she is in the house. She also would like to have her spare laptop connected to her TV in the kitchen and use the slingbox to send the TV signal.

My initial thought was that she doesn't need the internet since she won't be connecting to it from outside her home. Am I wrong in this assumption? I figured a strictly home use for the slingbox would work better since theoretical speeds of a home network is faster than Broadband over Cable, at least in upstream, correct?

Excuse my ignorance on this matter, any help on this is greatly appreciated

should be able to. i installed one in a friends house and while his internet was being incredibly flakey with most apps (web browsing, etc), slingbox was working just fine with just connecting through lan.

Yep. You need internet to download updates, but Im guessing she can do that. I have mine setup here for the same reason, never bothered to setup outside streaming as i use it to watch my dishnetwork shows on the computer in the background (cnn, etc)

Exactly the way I have mine set up.

You don't need the internet for Slingbox. I recently disconnected my internet with Time Warner and was still able to use my Slingbox to view cable channels. As long as you have a router and a computer/laptop connected to that router via wireless/wired, you should be good.

Sorry to hijack. But, can you watch a dif channel on main tv and say a laptop in another room via a slingbox? I would like my son to watch his cable shows and leave my main tv alone when I want to watch something else or game.

yes you can watch a different channel on slingbox with a pc connected while watching a different channel on your physical TV
