Do I need HD DVD player

I'm looking for a Christmas gift for my wife and Canon HR10 looks as a good candidate. However I have just regular DVD player. I know that I can play video directly of camera, however my HD TV has only one HDMI input and receiver isn't capable to switch HDMI. So using DVD player is more suitable. Do I need HD DVD player? Will Toshiba HD DVD play video off the camera?
