Do I need G-Sync with GTX 980 SLI

Hi,

I currently have a ASUS 28 inch 4k monitor. I'm looking at getting a second monitor that will better at gaming. Is it worth paying more for a G-Sync monitor if I already have 2x GTX 980s in SLI? I'm looking at the ASUS 27 inch PG278Q. Thanks!

I would hold off and wait for the http://www.cnet.com/products/acer-xb270hu/

Depending on actual reviews, it seems to be the go-to monitor people are waiting for next month. If you can get hands on it that is..

Not sure why you would want to upgrade though, the setup you have is fantastic, you don't really notice much with a G-sync with SLI 980s at 4k.

That monitor is still IPS/AHVA with it's inherently slow pixels and input lag. OP: You don't NEED a G-Sync display but if you want one then the PG278Q is a good buy. If you can wait until the second half of the year, the Acer Predator would seemingly be a far better choice since it's 34" with a curved 21:9 display and also has 144 Hz + G-Sync. I may end up ditching my ROG in favor of that if it lives up to expectations.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I need to do a little more research. I shouldn't have used the word "NEED". :) I should of said is the extra cost of G-Sync worth it.

Thanks for the reply. Most games I don't notice any tears except Watch Dogs and 3d mark tests.

As an owner of a ASUS PG278Q, I'd also say wait for the competition. Even if they don't end up being as good as the ASUS, they should at least help drive the price down.

It's the overall package of low input lag, really fast response time, good image quality and ULMB on top that makes the G-Sync displays attractive. It remains to be seen how the upcoming IPS models handle though.

+1 to wait for competition.

you dont need G-s.. but (i dare say) since you seem to have quite the budget, you would be gimping yourself; G-sync (or ANY other form of synchronization) is a great feature.

So, wait for competition - both the new (Nvidia based) G-Sync monitors, and the soon-to-be (AMD) Freesync.

FreeSync is useless for him - read the OP, he has 2 x 980s.

I kind of want g-sync myself after playing with a neighborhood kid's new Asus ROG. However, I have a decent IPS 27" panel now and see little reason to move to another 1440p screen. It would have to be an ultra wide or a larger size like a 34" for me to consider it.

Panel type has nothing to do with input lag.

Note in particular the low input lag (red bar) from the Dell and Eizo models

I've seen that and the overall measurement of 8ms for the Eizo which is decent (but 2x the PG278Q). Also keep in mind they are just guesstimating the signal processing time. The 2414H of course does much better by turning off some electronics to lower it's signal processing. So yes it is components but overdrive/overshoot is panel related. For example, I've got an IPS where prad.de says the following: "The latency is an important value for players, we determined as the sum of the signal delay time and half the average picture change time. The signal delay is extremely short in 27EA83-D with only 1.4 milliseconds. Half the middle picture change time is 4.3 ms (fast) is also very short. With only 5.7 milliseconds, the mean total latency is also attractive for high-speed gamers." But it has visible overshoot and a lot more lag vs the PG278Q I use next to it.

There are a lot of new monitors coming up in the next few months what with HDMI 2 and HDCP compliance for 4k. Given you already have a 4k monitor and not living in a hell, i'd wait unless that money is burning a hole in your pocket. Personally i'd not buy a monitor locked in with a specific GPU vendor, but that is your call, as to how much that matters to you.

My humble opinion...

I would wait to see some reviews that show what input lag is like with HDMI2 before jumping all over it. Still seems like displayport is the best interface.

Quite, but you may have designs on using your monitor in more than one way, no? Especially 4k content, which has HDCP 2.2 iirc as a requirement.

Yes. If you have some other device(s) to attach to your monitor that doesn't have DP, then by all means do so. For running off of a pair of 980's though, it's likely that sticking with DP is the best option.

It's a really transitional period in monitor technology currently. I agree with the wait and see approach. You current screen isn't slumming it so you'll be fine.

As far as G-Sync goes I don't own a capable monitor but I've seen/experienced it in action and it really is noticeable.

i'm sorry, that was just the instinctive self-defense mechanism against the inevitable "Freesync is better" posts that would have come if i didnt include it.
