I need to pull my 450 p3 out of domain controller, and replace it with 550mhz. Same 100mhz fsb on each. The reason is for dualie board for other server needs 450mhz. There is nothing wrong with either systems. I've backed up Domain Controller,so if I loose her it won't be the end of the world, it just means more work. Should I try swapping 450 with 550 without doing fresh w2k install, or is cpu swap no big deal?

A CPU swap does not require a re-install d00d:D

Unless you are also changing the mobo, your OS will be fine. Even if you are changing the mobo, odds are that your OS will detect the new resources (or the allocation of them...eg. IRQ, DMA) and make the changes necessary in one or two reboots.

I've swapped out CPUs and never ever a prob. I've even swapped CPUs/Mobos, and only once had to re-install.

G/L either way....this should be painless for you;)

CPU upgrades (same mobo) will *never* require an OS reinstall (I went from a P-II 350 to a 1 GHz P-III in my old Tyan Trinity 400 and kept everything...it just ran *faster*).

Mobo upgrades *may* require a reinstall if a significant new feature is added (when the Trinity was replaced by an ABIT VP-6, the ONLY change was the two additional IDE channels; however, that in itself was significant and forced a reinstall).

Yeah, i've done motherboard and cpu installs and i've never had a problem with the OS......mobos can be finicky smoetimes, but usually after a couple of reboots, you're laughing. Good luck
