Do I need fans for my hard drives?

Hey, I have a 250gb and 2x160gb maxtor hard drives all right beside each other. Currently I have them not screwed in, resting on the side of the rack upsidedown while my computercase is laying sideways, mobo facing up.

When I put em into the hD cages, one above the other, they get amazingly hot, so im wondering if that much heat is too much.

If i get a fan for it, i need reccommendations for really quiet ones, or one large one that can cool all of these at the same time.

If they get too hot in their cages, then they need cooling since that is where they are normally supposed to be. Maybe consider getting as little as one 2.5'' to 5.25'' cooler/converter (cheap, my CompUSA has 'em for about $5-$10) and take out the middle one and put it in an empty 5.25'' bay if you have one? That would give both that one and the other two some room to "breathe" as it were

Does your case have a spot for an intake fan that points at your hd rack?
Most do anymore.....

Then you should use whatever size fan your case mount will allow.
Then try to put a little airspace between your drives if you can.

You shouldn't need a really high powered fan, just some airflow across the drive surface.
