Do I need ECC RAM for a Xeon E3-1240V2?

Hi,

I'm starting to put together a new system to replace my old Core 2 box, and I'm looking at buying a Xeon E3-1240V2 because it's cheaper than the equivalent i7 and I don't need the Intel GPU. However, I want to pair it up with a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H mobo which doesn't support ECC RAM and I'm unsure whether the Xeon E3s require ECC or not. Can anyone give me a definitive answer?

Thanks!

Your motherboard doesn't even support ECC RAM. You need a workstation board to use ECC. So no, your CPU doesn't need it, it works fine with standard RAM on a consumer board.

I've built a Xeon E3-1230V2 rig with regular memory and an Asus H77 chipset board, it works perfectly.

Yeah, I know the board doesn't support ECC (and wrote that in the initial post). That's why I asked :).

But thanks for the reassurance. I ordered that stuff now.
