I'm going to be gettin' my Asus A7A266 mobo + CPU soon. I already got my 7200rpm HD. I was wondering do I need an Ultra ATA 100 Controller card? What is this card for anyways? Thanx.

that mobo has ata-100 onboard. You don't need tha card. That card is useful if you want to run more than 4 ide devices.(HD's, CD, ZIP etc)

Most drives can't sustain read speeds much higher than that. You are not being limited by the interface but the drive itself. It's perfectly normal.

It can handle higher burst speeds above the average 34mb/sec, but I don't know how effective that is or when it really comes into play....

Number looks comparable to mine as well, SCUBA...

A higher burst speed benchmark mean NO real world perfromance gain. You will NOT be able to notice any improvement. Just slap that HD on the mobo an you will be all set. There is no need for a ata66 or ata100 controller card unless you want to add more IDe devices.
