Do I need aftermarket cooling?

Hey all!

I upgraded my HTPC from an aging AthlonXP-m 2600+ to an Opteron 165 so that I could record 2 SD + 2 HD at the same time. I have a few parts left to get, but am just about ready to go.

So, when I got the 165 the first thing I did was work through overclocking it. I don't have really good memory so I think that's holding me back.

Anyways - After much work and experimentation I have the 165 @ 2440mhz 1.375v. 270mhz FSB HTT 4X (1080mhz).

It's been burning all weekend with two instances of Prime. Currently, Core 0 is at 55 degrees and Core 1 is at 65 at full tilt. Being my first Opteron and my first A64 build altogether I'm just not sure what kind of temps I should be expecting.

Currently I have the stock Opteron cooler, the one with four heatpipes. I was looking at the Zalman 9500 and the Scythe Ninja. The case I am getting in an Antec with a 120mm fan on the back. I was a fan of the Zalman but the price is putting me off. I was looking at running the Ninja completely passive and relying on the 120mm fan on the Antec to pull the heat off.

So my questions are - are these temps out of whack for a Opty 165 overclocked this way and if you would recommend an aftermarket cooler does anyone have any experience with using the Ninja in the way I have described? I've been doing searches on the net all weekend and still have no clue as to what the best thing would be to do. Looking to get some practical advice.

Thanks!

Jeez guys, I posted the explanation that I accidentally hit the enter key and was typing the post up now five minutes before you posted Baked. You guys just had to get your sarcastic comments in. Hope you enjoyed it. I'll probably get more sarcastic comments about me accidentally hitting the enter key than I will practical advice.

Yes thats a challenge.

I cant post by hitting the enter key, that would only advance one more line. How do you and a few more people post by hitting the enter key?

You can always buy a Arctic Cooling 64 from Provantage and give it a try. 65C looks really high.

How do you check the temperature of both cores?
If you are using that utility that is written for Intel core duo, there are reports on its being incorrect on 939 dual cores!

Yes I am using Core Temp. I had just been using ASUS's MB Probe, but I thought Core Temp worked fine on Athlon chips.

Idle temps are about 30 on both. So its double the temp when it's working full tilt. If 65 sounds high then I think I need to try something else. I've looked at the Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro but from what I've read, it seems like it works best with people only doing mild overclocks, and I'm not sure mine would be considered mild. It can't be worse than the stock heatsink though right?

I really would like that Zalman but just can't force myself to spend the seventy bucks on it. I like the Ninja well enough and I'll take another look at the Freezer. Anyone that has used both care to comment?
