Do I need a UPS?

I've been thinking about getting a UPS latley. Im not really sure that I need it though. I dont have any critical data or need to be up during an outage. My main concern is that when my brother turns on the TV or fan or something alike in his room it makes a pop noise on my sound on my pc. I think its a surge according to APC I have a surge protector, but it seems to be getting through. I also have had some trouble with my motherboard but that may be completley unrelated. Im hesitent to throw down $100 for a ups without knowing a little more. Thanks for your input.

I "good" spike/surge strip should be all you need. A UPS is nice if you have the extra money, as it will provide power during extreme brown-outs as well as blackouts, but is not necessary. Go for a name brand spike/surge strip such as APC, Leibert, TrippLite.

One good thing about a good UPS is the line conditioning, if you have questionable wiring in your house (and it sounds like you do), it will smooth out the voltage and you won't have those "pops" when something is turned on. You would be suprised at how many unexplained "crashes" are cause by this. You can get a surge protector with line conditioning, but they approach the price of a decent UPS, might as well get the UPS. Look around on the for sale forum, I bought an APC Backups 650pro w/no battery for $20 shipped and purchased a new battery on ebay for less than $20 shipped, beats any surge strip!😉

I have a cheap free-after-rebate UPS from Staples off the Hot Deals forums. It probably only has enough electricity for me to save files and shutdown cleanly, but that thing has been excellent to me. It has come into use a few times already.

Yup, I would not run mine without one. I think the conditioning of the power helps computer parts live longer so to speak.

I went and looked at the APC 350 ES at Office Depot for $39.99 with $5 instant rebate and $10 MIR but I asked and was told it did not do line conditioning. At APC's website it looks like only the LS models do automatic voltage regulation and they start at $120. This sounds like line conditioning correct? Thats a little much for me espically since im just hearing a little pop noise. Im pretty sure that our house does have faulty wiring though. Would it better in my situation to go with something like this? These two models are very similar. The only differences are maximum line current per phase (7.5 vs. 15), and nominal input current (5 A vs. 10 A.) I have no idea what these mean anyway. Any suggestions for me? I have been looking at APC a lot but I dont neccesarily need that certain brand. Also I dont really need the battery backup. Will they function without one? Thanks once again.

Edit: Upon close expection the LS line only does AVR (automatic voltage regulation) for low voltages (brownouts.)

Check this out
I have the Cyberpower 900avr and its really good.

I had my home theater stuff plugged into it for a while and worked out well.

Also if a storm knocks out your power for say 30 mins. you won't be in the dark.
