Do I need a UPS? Replace the power supply?

I've had some problems with my HW lately. 2 blown video cards and a HD crash in the last 6 months. I suspect that there are voltage irregularities in this house, since the light in my room flickers (very slightly, but noticeably). I have a surge protector, but no UPS.

So do I need a UPS? I don't really need any backup capability, but I'm thinking the voltage irregularities are taking their toll on some of the components? Would the power supply be affected? Or could it be a bad power supply? I don't know how to go about figuring this out.

Thanks.

It could be either thing. Or it could be a combination of both. I use a low wattage UPS simply for the line regulation. The ~5 minutes of standby time, no monitor, is hardly an issue. I guess replace one, see if the problems go away, if not replace the other as well. personally, I'd start with a line regulating UPS.

EeyoreX states what I would do also. as long as you aren't OCing, keeping everything clean, all connectors secure, etc. I would go for a PS then then UPS. Good luck.

Welcome to Anandtech, btw.

Thanks for your responses. I think I'm going to try a UPS first. I've been wanting to replace the case/power supply/fans for a while because they're so noisy, so that will come in due time anyway. I'd rather have the UPS first to protect the new stuff later.
