Do I Need A Registry Cleaner?

Is it a good idea to run a registry cleaner now and then on your system? My current PC is two years-old and runs like a Swiss watch, so I'm wondering if I even need it. I defrag my hard drive with Diskeeper and PerfectDisk every 2-3 days and I also run Check Disk once a week. In two years, I've only uninstalled one program so I'm wondering if my registry even needs to be cleaned.

The one that seems to get a lot of publicity is Registry Mechanic Linky

But, like I said, I wonder if I even need it considering how well my PC currently runs (my last PC was five years-old when I got rid of it and it was running perfectly at the time).

Thanks for any advice.

If it ain't broke ...

Yeh, that's what I'm thinking...my last PC lasted for 5 years and that was with Win95! I guess I just like doing all the preventive maintenance stuff on my computer for some reason (defrag, check disk, etc)...

Preventative maintenance is definitely a good idea, but I don't think registry cleaners are necessary.

As long as you keep your OS and anti-virus up-to-date and defrag periodically, you shouldn't have any problems.

Actually using a Registry cleaner on a regurlar basis is not recommended as problems may occur and you won't benefit from it at all.

Thanks for all of the advice. Believe it or not, I've only uninstalled one program in two years, so my registry is probably pretty clean. I think for now I'm gonna pass on getting a registry cleaner!

I sometimes run Regscrubxp. If there's something very obvious I might remove it, but basically I agree that it can be risky.

Even so, I highly recommend Jeff7's recommendation of "Crapcleaner." Although I don't use it for registry fixes it has some very useful functions. By default you can install it as a right click menu function of the recycle bin.
