Do I need a Nforce2 ?

Im building a new comp and so far its ganna be a 2100+ and a Gig of crucial 2100DDR. What Im wondering is if a Nforce is worth the extra 50 bucks that an older Socket A board would be.

What im looking for is a board that has 6 pci slots and not much fluff. No need for raid or scsi.

Was looking at the Epox Nforce, but do I really need it?

Thanks
Kard

personally i think it is worth it over the via chipsets 🙂

you do get good sound from it, unless you already havea good sound card, then prob not.

is the onboard sound better then a Live! value?

on a second note, the atx board doesnt seem to be a standard connectors for an ATX case, does the board come with a plate thatll go on atx cases?

You don't really see that much benefit from the nForce2 chipset unless you are using a CPU with 333FSB and dual ddr. You have the dual DDR (even though it's pc2100 when nForce2 runs at pc2700), but personally I don't think it's worth the extra 50 bones unless you are going to get a 2600+ 333fsb or higher cpu.

Then do you suggest another cheap mobo (the epox is about 110 shipped)

All im looking for is a board that has 6 pci slots and not much fluff. No need for raid or scsi.

And stability, the most important thing is stability. I dont plan on ocing.

The question of how much a person is willing to pay for performance is an individual\personal choice.
If you have to ask, you should save the money and get a KT333 motherboard. I think the difference is around 10 to 20% increase in performance with a Nforce2 system compared to a KT400 system.

Ah heck, I'm going for the nforce2 asus board. I have to spend a lot of money before the end of the year.

If you run out of things to spend money on, you can feel free to send some my way 😉

Get a KT333 board if you don't want to spend what NForce2 is worth.

stability and not much frills... Soltek boards are what you want... you can spend like $70 or 80 bucks and get a good stable mobo.

I have an SL-75DRV4 and it's one of the most reliable solid mobos I've ever used.

i would spend the little extra to get the nforce2. why buy an outdated mobo? you may want to upgrade your proc someday and then you'll be wishing you got the nforce 2.

The ASUS A7N8X is a dream. You won't regret it. Drop the latencies on your memory, run it at 166 and watch it burn up the benches.

Just curious, but what do you need 2 hd controller cards as well as a scsi card?
How many hard drives and optical drives do you need in your machine?

2 optical, 4 hds, the scsi is for a tape drive, and an internal zipp drive. one of the controller cards is a raid card and 2 of the hds are on that.
