i have my rig hooked up to my home theater reciever. im using ASUS onboard audio, and recently I've been getting a lot of static.
i have all gold connections, so i know thats not the problem. speakers are ok, wires are all ok...
could it be that i should get a sound card? are there any benefits over onboard?

Does it just give you static when the comptuer is the source?

If so, an AV-710 with digital optical connection should give you a very nice interference free connection.

Do you have it set up now with 1/8" to RCA adapters to a 6 channel direct input now?

I don't know if this helps, but I used to have issues with my o/b sound-card after changing video-card, it turned out I had some driver conflicts.
If you recently installed somthing new, look for conflicting drivers.

Do you still get static if you hook something else up to it?

(Like a portable cd player attached to the input instead of the computer?)

Do you have all the stuff muted that you're not using? (line-in etc.)

EDIT: on the sound card options I mean

In the windows volume control, there should be options to mute line-in and other things. If your line-in isn't muted, it may be causing statid.

(go to control panel and sounds and then advanced)
