Do I need a new router?

I recently upgraded my cable internet to 50mbps by 8mbps. When I hard wire my desktop directly to the modem I see a 1gbps connection on the bottom right portion of my screen.

When I hook up the modem to my older belkin router and hard wire my desktop to the router, I see a 100 mbps connection.

I am running windows xp and I do like to play online games both on the pc and ps3.

If modem and router details are needed, I can get those.

Thanks!

I am not sure what your question is.

You see 1gbps connection because your desktop and cable modem both have 1gbps nic.
When you are hook up to the Belkin router you see 100mbps because your Belkin only support 100mbps max.
