Do I need a new power supply?

Hey all,
This is my first post to this forum. I am doing some major rennovations to my system and am wondering if my current power supply is up to the task.

I will be running an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz on a GIGABYTE GA-M61P-S3 AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 ATX AMD Motherboard with Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800, 4 hdds (probably 2 SATA, 2 IDE), Soundblaster (probably Audigy), 1 Firewire and 1 USB card. For now, I will be using the on board video, but may upgrade to an AGP card in the near future.

I will be using the onboard NIC. I am using a Coolermaster case with 4 case fans.

Right now I am running Vista 32 bit but have Vista 64 I may throw on there once I am finished upgrading. This is going to be used primarily as an everyday email, internet and MS Office computer, but will begin doing some video editing and web development on it as well, along with Photoshop. So, nothing real resource intensive except for Vista and the occasional video editing sessions.

The power supply I am currently using is a Thermaltake Silent Purepower ATX 480W Power Supply.

Is this adequate, or should I be looking for a higher capacity supply? I have one I can steal from another system, or I can go with the COOLER MASTER Real Power Pro EPS12V 650W Power Supply.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. Have a great day.

Sincerely,
David

You should be fine.

However, may I ask, why go with an AMD system when you can get a Q6600 and a P35 board?

Well first thing you need to know is that the motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot. The new video slot now is PCI-e.

Now your PSU only offers 18A on a single +12v rail. This will not be enough to power the system. You will need to get another PSU.

If money is tight then i recommend you go with this FSP 450W-PN that offers a combined amperage of 29A on the +12v rails. Plenty of power for the system till you are ready to get an actual video card. For under $60 its a very good unit.

If you want to be ready for a decent video card upgrade then i would go with one of Corsairs PSUs. all of them are top quality and will power most systems that run a single video card. I'd go with the 450VX. Its a well priced and powerful unit.
