I just bought a new abit av8 and athlon 64 3200 and was thinking I could just install them in my old antec sx1240 case with antec pp-403x 400 watt power supply. However, trying to attach the power supply to the motherboard, I have the 2x10 pin power connector attaching the power supply to the motherboard, but I am also supposed to connect the auxiliary power supply to the 2x2 pin (atx12v1) connector. My power supply has nothing coming out of it that looks like it would fit this 2x2 pin connector on the motherboard that they are referencing in the abit manual. Am I missing something, thinking that my atx power supply would support this atx motherboard? Because it has been powering my old msi kt266 motherboard, which did not have this auxiliary power supply connector, for 5 years now. Thanks in advance for your help.

All that is is an extra line to provide more power to the CPU.

Im not 100% sure but i believe you can run with out.

I would just get a new PSU though. That means it is not P4 certified and might not be strong enough. What are the rails like (Amps, Volts) YOu should have at the BARE MINIMUM 18A.

Yeah, you need a new PSU conforming to ATX12V spec. I don't know if it will even boot without it--a PSU that old probably doesn't have enough +12V amperage to accomodate that system.

If it doesn't have enough amps on the 12v rail it will boot for a second or less and then shut down. At least thats what the system my friend had that didn't have enough power did.

Yeah, it has been powering on for a second or two and then making a couple beeps and then turning off. Thanks for the help guys, any cases or power supplies to recommend? I shouldn't need too much power, probably just 350-400w power supply.
