If you mean connect 2 computers and then connect them to a network:
If you want to use a crossover cable in this case then you would need an extra NIC in one of the PC's (the one connected to the Network).
If you just want to connect them, just plug in a crossover cable between the 2.
DaLeroy is correct... you need to use what is called a crossover cable. You should be able to get one just about anywhere they sell regular cat 5 cables.
You should also be running WIN98SE or higher. I believe WIN98 SE introduced Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). I'm assuming thats what you're looking for 🙂.
There are many resources on the web regarding home networks...so I won't bother going into too much detail. Its really not all that difficult after you struggle with it for a month or so 🙂.
There is a bug in WIN98 SE that can cause the ICS to not work correctly... so before you attempt it... I would update your WIN98 SE (If that's what you're using) with the latest patches from the MS website.
Also for more info, I have a network set up already with a Linksys system (two cards and a 10Mbps hub). So the software is already there and it works perfectly...
I was wondering if connecting them directly would let me obtain 100 Mbps instead of buying a 10/100 hub.
Yes... you will be at 100 instead of 10 without the hub...since both your cards are 10/100. You will not be able to add a third computer without using the hub.
The crossover cable will allow both cards to work at full duplex if they support it. Normally you would need a switch instead of a hub to get full duplex. You'll also get a 100Mbps connection between them. You should see a big difference when moving large files.
