Do I NEED a headset, or will microphone in the webcam work?

I've been reading up on how to use Windows Live Messenger to voice chat with people online. The info pages keep referring to using "a VOIP headset" which I don't have.

I do have a webcam with a microphone built in, as well as computer speakers to hear with.

Do I NEED the headset for some strange functionality or will my webcam/microphone/speakers work?
 
You don't NEED one, I occasionally use the microphone in the webcam for skype, but quality will be better with a headset for sure.
