Do I need a DVI-D cable?

I'm buying the Acer AL2623W monitor. The specs say it has a "1x DVI-D - 24 pin digital DVI" interface.

Do I need a DVI-D cable then? Or just a standard DVI cable? Is there even such thing as a DVI-D cable?

Are you implying that you are buying it used without the accessories? If you're buying it new then it comes with the cable you need (DVI-D). There is no regular just DVI cable.
