Do I need a DVD hardware decoder?

I just ordered a DVD-ROM for my PC. I can't believe I waited so long! 😀 Anyway, I remember reading a lot a long time ago that for the best DVD video playback quality, you would need a hardware decoder. Is that still true? And if so, what should I get? I don't know if my video card has that capability built in, but I doubt it (I don't remember that being a feature). How does a hardware decoder work, anyway? 😀

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Cool! That's what I was hoping! 😀 I have an AthlonXP 1600+. I remember hearing a lot about hardware decoders a while back, but since I hadn't in a while, I was hoping that more current systems didn't need them.

Thanks!

Software decoding all the way. Either PowerDVD or WinDVD will suffice. Maximum PC recently reviewed both and felt that the former was the better choice (based on image quality, all else being equal). Good luck!

If you happen to have an ATi or SiS graphics chip there, you got DVD decoding hardware anyhow. The usual suspects in DVD player software let you choose whether to use the hardware assistance or go entirely through the CPU.
