so a couple weeks ago a linux computer that i leave in 24/7 for the last 5 years started getting hardware errors and freezing. i rebooted and it kept happening. i knew the power supply was old and making sorta funny noises but the whole machine is 5 years old as well. do you think its just the power supply or is it possible the board is going bad after working perfectly all this time. ive only blown out the inside a couple times, is it possible heat damage occurred? i dont mind getting a new computer but i dont have time right now to research linux compatibility so for right now it would be convenient to get this one back up

Well, if you're going to upgrade that machine eventually, I see no problem in getting an inexpensive PSU like the CX430 to try with. The worst that can happen is that its the board that has an issue, and then you can reuse that PSU for your eventual upgrade. With a 5 year old PSU you'll properly want to change it anyway... 🙂

do you think that an old power supply alone would cause that a hardware issue. also does it make sense that a a 5 year old board would go bad suddenly after 5 years. even if it does ive easily gotten my moneys worth but im not sure how well new hardware works with linux. does anyone know if there is an issue with the new bioses and linux?

Honestly, I've seen stranger things. Caps do degrade with age, and if this is a cheap OEM PSU, then it might suddenly not output voltage/ripple within ATX specifications. Which can lead to all sorts of weird issues. Not to mention fried mainboards.

As for Linux, it works just fine with UEFI. Make sure you use an up-to-date distro to install though. The worst thing that can happen is that you have to boot in legacy mode.
