Hey, this is my first time at this fourm and it wont be my last. i built a comp that i hoped to reach 4Ghz with. unfortunatly i was only able to reach 3.2 stable. here are my specs:
Asus P5B DLX WIFI BIOS Version804
Intel E6600 (Oc'd 8x400=3.2)
Corsair XMS-6400C5 Ram, lowered to 4-4-4-12 (ram at 1:1 with FSB, 800Mhz)
Thermaltake 550Watt PSU
Swiftech Watercooling kit

Does anyone know what i have to do to reach 4Ghz? thanks alot :)

your multiplier is 9

you need 450+ FSB for 4GHz. You aint doing it with that RAM... it wont do 900 mhz on CL4, and probably not even at CL5.

Buy an ES chip of either an E6700 or greater....I haven't seen many if any E6600's hit 4ghz...and especially not on low end water cooling and high end air....

Yeah, hate to say it but you'll need a lot of changes to hit 4Ghz

(1)- RAM! Do some research on ram that hits 1Ghz+ with moderate latency settings

(2)- Looks like the Nvidia 600 series is going to be the one that really hits the stable extreme FSB o/cs, so might start looking at 680, or wait for 650s to hit.

(3)- On either your current board or a replacement, probably want to get a block on the mobo chipset as well.

(4)- Look into various voltmods for mobo, and obviously be very careful.

(5)- Congrats on your first post, and for choosing an utterly ridiculous forum name. Bonus points for using all caps ;)

buy better ram like a kit of corsair CL4 or CL3 memory. those will hit 900+ mhz easily.

the CL3s do 900 mhz with 3-3-3 timings and 2.45v. the CL4s will do 900 mhz with 4-4-4 and 2.45v

450 FSB will yeild 4050 mhz cpu clock. you will need 1.6-1.65v to do that. dont be afraid of putting that voltage, you are on watercooling.

Agreed; try raising your timings to 5-5-5-15, and see how much farther it will go. Then raise it to 5-6-6-18, to see if there's any more Mhz left in it.

edit: Watch your voltages closely, since you don't have a high end psu.

You do realize high voltages can kill a cpu even if its running cool don't you? I wouldn't put 1.6-1.65v on a C2D.

No C2D's have died because of voltage issues yet. It would be the first one. There are people running 1.65 for the last 6 months on ES's with no problems. These chips take whatever voltage you want to throw at it and seem to do fine.

As for that memory there is absolutely no chance that it will hit any kind of a high fsb. It is meant to be in Corsairs value line and the speeds you get show that.

man...seems like these c2d's are too good to be true. I dont have the guts to push my cpu past 1.55vcore fore everyday use. (right not its at 1.45) I have pushed it over 1.6 for some benching but my temps were too hot.

hey, so i'm not going to rech 4 without some luck; so my question is how high would i be able to go with my set up? when i run 3dmark it tells me my max internal clock is 3.8, but i've tryed and had it crash at login. and i KNOW it not my temps. i askes my a buch of my guy friends but they dont know any thing about this; and the girls just want to talk about...well not comps. what am i to do?

Doesn't gate oxidation become an issue with high voltage, regardless of cooling?

1: If your CPU cannot handle 4ghz, no memory, or board, will allow you to reach 4ghz.

What week is you CPU and how high can you go on stock CPU Voltage?

You have the best board for high FSB overclocking. Nvidia's 680i turned out to be "not so good" afterall (just look around)

Your RAM might be able to take the 450 FSB if you use a devider. Under RAM Speed, just choose the lowest speed possible after setting the FSB to 450 (it should read about 800mhz or less)

Also add some voltages to your VFSB, VMCH (max the VMCH and go midle ground on the VFSB)

Lower your CPU multiplier to 6 or 7 and try booting with the 450 FSB.

If it does, then change the multiplier back to 9 and lower the FSB to 400. Set the Vcore to around 1.45 and see if it can boot at that speed. If not try more Vcore. 1.5

Intel's max allowed Vcore is 1.55V
Some people don't like to use more than 1.4
Others are using 1.6 and 1.7 (crazy people)

Exactly, too much voltage will start breaking down the gate oxide now matter how cool it is. Eventualy, the gate oxide will break down enough that the transistor will fail.

I don't know if it counts but I want to join the 4GHz Club too (with my Pentium D...:)). I need 286 FSB to do it. Can I?

You'd be the only person here who could answer that question. So, can it?

I don't know yet. I have a hit-and-miss HDD detection issue at anything over 240 FSB. Once I get that sorted out...I'll see how high the RAM and/or my temps will allow me to go.
