Do I have to wear a tie to a wedding?

Going to a wedding today. It's a traditional church wedding and banquet hall reception. I hate wearing ties, especially during the summer. Do I have to? I am by no means a stylish person.

Yes, you don't wear a tie to please yourself, look good or, be comfortable. You wear a tie to meet society's expectations given the formality of the occasion. Just do it.

If you don't care what other people think, don't wear the tie. If you're going to get a complex because you believe everyone else thinks less of you for not wearing it, then you should wear it and save yourself the anguish.

Me, I normally wear a nice blazer and shirt but no tie. That's about as formal as I will get.

With the bolded, wear a damn tie. This day is about making others happy. Suck it up. Put on the tie. Smile.

If your attendance will make others happy, then it makes sense to dress nicely. Do your part to make this day memorable for everyone, especially the newlyweds.

If you do not wear a tie, the wedding party will form a circle around you, point at you, and laugh like little schoolgirls.

Honestly, it does not matter if you wear a tie or not. The point is to have fun, and everyone involved has their individual sense of fashion. Be comfortable but look nice.

At one time, I thought like the OP and would never - ever - wear dress clothes unless forced to. Then in a fit of rare practicality, I decided to have a suit made to measure* because stuff happens where you have to wear one, and I figured I may as well be comfortable.

Being in a good suit that actually fit entirely changed my point of view on the matter.

*{"Made To Measure" means standard patterns, cut to the measurements your tailor sends in - about a 10% premium over off the rack. And WAAAY cheaper than a full custom.}

Wear the tie formally for the wedding ceremony. Loosen it and open the top button for the meal, then remove it for the rest of the festivities.
