Do I have to pay duties if I buy from someone over the net?

I am in Canada and I wanna buy a DSL modem from iamwiz in the US. So if I send him and money and he sends me the modem, do I have to pay duties or anything? Do duties apply to used items and on small sales?

This is the first time I've brough anything from the US, so a little help would be appreciated 🙂

Usually it depends on the declared value. It may be duty-free up to $500 or something...

LOL, first time I read the title I thought it said "... if I buy someone over the net?" 😕 😉

Just a reminder, posting information on how to avoid customs duties is a bannable offense, or at least it used to be.

Edit again: It is a bannable offense, link

Yes, you're responsible for any duties that may be incurred in the purchase. I have no idea what they actually are, but I believe you get a bill from customs. There's been some threads in FS/T about it

I have shipped from the U.S to Canada several times and from what I have heard is you (The one in Canada) will have to pay additional, amount is decided by the value of the package. Has to do with Importing I guess, I really do not know what the fee is for.

Marty - there are no duties on used computer equipment. If you go to Ars they have a good thread at the top of the agora about getting stuff shipped to Canada. Basically get it shipped USPS and you will only pay $5 and tax (GST and HST or PST depending where you are).
