We gave notice on December 1. We were moved out on December 4.

Property managers called Thursday and wanted permission to show it. I told therm to go ahead, we're not there anyway.

Now the prop managers want the keys before our lease ends.

Yay or nay to giving them back early?

We say nay so we can stick it to them just a little bit longer. Yes. We're bitter. Like coffee.

No one says you can't go duplicate them. That do not duplicate sign simply means go to Chinatown or some Asian store and get it duplicated =).

If you paid for the whole month then keep your keys till the 31st. If they want the keys early then they should issue you a credit for the rest of the month.

No shame is asking them for money back for the rest of the month. They already asked for the keys.

yeah i know. i did when i was college age.

ok in some things i still do. but on something like this? i really do not see the point. just go in and give them the keys.

not that it matters. they will find many excuses to keep the Security deposit.

Read your lease/contract. There just might be a line about you needing to return those keys.

I am so tempted.

They said they painted. Nope, they patched previous holes only. They said they cleaned it and shampooed the carpets. Nope, the dining room was sticky and the carpets left dirt on our socks. I say feh to them and their crappy slumlord tactics.

That said, I'll give them the keys soon.

sure he has to return them (or pay for new locks) but he can wait until the 31st. it is still his apartment.

he paid rent for the month and gave his 1 month notice.

I'm a landlord in MA, but IANAL.

Read your lease to get your answer. Most leases state that acceptance of a key does not consitute termination of the lease or any of the responsibilities it brings for either the landlord or tenant (I'm pretty sure the MA standard lease form includes this). And under no circumstances will they be required to pro-rate you on a last month if you chose to vacate early... as a landlord you'd have to be a jackass to write a lease that gives up your rights like that.

Finally, expect the locks to be changed as soon as you do hand the keys in. Just an FYI.

This is generally good advice.

Do this. Ask them, "Are you going to credit me for the rest of the month?" Then when they obviously say no you simply reply, "Then no."

Honestly I don't see what the big deal is for the management, unless the keys can't be duplicated publicly (read: easily for you, cheaply for them). They're gonna change standard locks for the next tenant anyway (uncuttable keys only if any issued keys are unaccounted for). And unless you formally terminate the lease early in writing, they still can't change the locks until the lease expires for the reasons I gave above in my earlier post.

Some details as to the source of your bitterness might be useful (and amusing) here. :)

I am of the opinion that the space and the keys they provided are yours until your lease ends. You should be able to keep them if you are so inclined.

What I'm curious about is what you are so bitter about that you would do this? Seems like you are creating additional stress to a situation just to "stick it" to someone who isn't going to care after you are gone.
