do i have to format when changing mobos?

building a box for a buddy, should i format the hd again? justs going from a pII to a pIII and different mobo. running win 98. ohh, and is a fan on the hs really neccesary? the proc. has a massive hs. will cooling fans in the case be enough? jer

yes, from an old atlanta to a via dvt1. the "new"board has everything except a parallel port. jer

If using 98, you should definitely reformat, or at least fully reinstall Windows. With WinNT/XP/2K, you can do a "repair installation" that puts in a new HAL and reinstalls drivers for all your hardware, but that option is not really available with 95/98/ME.

Generally, heatsink fans are necessary. It may not be if the processor is running cool enough and you have a big enough heatsink on it, but if it's a stock P3 HS, you probably need the fan.

I'm glad to see there is someone here that I am in agreement with on this issue. I just hate all the advice given here telling people they must reinstall.

thanks m99 the hs is about 4 times as thick as the proc. the board is supposed to be a prototype, if i put a massive fan in the case. do ya think i'll be ok? it's a 600meg proc and i can't find anything on the board to identify it. jer
