Okay, I guess what I was asking (after doing a little research) is how I can tell if I have a 45 series or a 60 series hard drive without opening the box. I recently got in on one of those "Hot Deals" over in yonder other forum and heard some people got the 45, and others got the 60. There is supposedly a way to tell by looking on the box which one you have, but to the casual observer they look identical.
I found the exact specs for each. Pretty much the only difference I could find between the two is this:
For the 60 series --
DATA TRANSFER RATE:
To/From Interface (UDMA/100): ............ Up to 100.0 MBs
To/From Media: ........................... Up to 57.0 MBs
For the 45 series --
DATA TRANSFER RATE:
To/From Interface (UDMA/66): ............. Up to 100 MB/Sec
To/From Media: ........................... Up to 49.5 MB/Sec
Another very small difference (I think):
Start Time (0 - Drive Ready) ............... <8.5 sec (the 60)
Start Time (0 - Drive Ready) ............... 8.5 sec (the 45)
Otherwise, they're the same. So does this even matter? I don't know, but I do know that I want the better one! So somebody on one of the other forums was saying something about how you tell them apart, and I do believe it had something to do with the average seek time listed on the side of the box. Trouble is, on the Maxtor site, the average seek time for both the 40 and the 60 series is listed as the exact same!
I know I can open up the box and look at the model number and figure things out that way, but I don't think the actual model number is printed on the box.
Am I being picky? Yes, I guess I am, but I want to make sure I get the fastest drive for my money!
