Do I have the good Maxtor?

This has probably been asked, but it's an easy question...

I just got a Maxtor 30 GB HD (don't remember the exact model number, it's at home and I'm not). How do I tell if it's the "fast" one or not? Or is this even an issue on the 30 GB drives?

Thanks.

Oh yeah, it's the 7200 RPM one. But there's something more than that, I think, that I've read about. Something about 3 platters versus 4, and being able to tell if you have the "fast" drive by what the seek time is that's listed on the side panel... but I don't remember any details.

I think what you are aying the 30 gig drive with the 3 10 gig platters or the one with the 2 15gig platters...

As far as I know if it is ata100 and 7200rpm it is the one with 2 15gig platters...

Look at the part number:

There should be something that indicates the number of platters. I believe its the last number before the U6 (which would mean ata 100). You can search using the p/n. on there site, to find he model too.

Menel.

I heard that if the seek time is less than 9ms its the 40 drive and if its shows a seek time of less than 8.7 its the new diamondmax 60 drive.

Okay, I guess what I was asking (after doing a little research) is how I can tell if I have a 45 series or a 60 series hard drive without opening the box. I recently got in on one of those "Hot Deals" over in yonder other forum and heard some people got the 45, and others got the 60. There is supposedly a way to tell by looking on the box which one you have, but to the casual observer they look identical.

I found the exact specs for each. Pretty much the only difference I could find between the two is this:

For the 60 series --
DATA TRANSFER RATE:
To/From Interface (UDMA/100): ............ Up to 100.0 MBs
To/From Media: ........................... Up to 57.0 MBs

For the 45 series --
DATA TRANSFER RATE:
To/From Interface (UDMA/66): ............. Up to 100 MB/Sec
To/From Media: ........................... Up to 49.5 MB/Sec

Another very small difference (I think):
Start Time (0 - Drive Ready) ............... <8.5 sec (the 60)
Start Time (0 - Drive Ready) ............... 8.5 sec (the 45)

Otherwise, they're the same. So does this even matter? I don't know, but I do know that I want the better one! So somebody on one of the other forums was saying something about how you tell them apart, and I do believe it had something to do with the average seek time listed on the side of the box. Trouble is, on the Maxtor site, the average seek time for both the 40 and the 60 series is listed as the exact same!

I know I can open up the box and look at the model number and figure things out that way, but I don't think the actual model number is printed on the box.

Am I being picky? Yes, I guess I am, but I want to make sure I get the fastest drive for my money!

The best Maxtor 30 g HD out right now is the Diamond Max plus HD that is 7200rpm, and says <8.7ms seek time on the UPC label area.
