Do I have my IDE devices set up right? (HDD, Burner, CD-ROM)

Trying to get my this burner working in my moms computer. Let me start by saying I HATE working on this POS IBM case. What a PITA. She's running Win XP.
Running Nero version..well...it's frozen right now. Every time I try to copy a CD it freezes.

I have it setup like this:

IDE0 Primary: HDD ATA-66 cable

IDE1 Primary: CD-RW ATA-66 cable
IDE1 Slave: CD-ROM ATA-66 cable

I know that's not the optimal setup, I should have the burner by itself right? But if I have the CD-ROM and HDD on the same IDE channel will that drop the speed of the HDD? And in order to do that, I have to use a ATA-33 cable for now for the CD-RW because stupid one that IBM sent is a 1 device cable for the HDD and it's only like 8" long.

So. what's the best way to go about this?

Thanks,
Dave

Make sure you have the Windows XP CD-RW patch and Nero version 5.5.6.4 (for Windows XP).

The configuration you have for your IDE channels is the optimal configuration.

Is this a machine that you built or did she buy it somewhere? If the jumpers on the CD ROM are set to master and the Writer to slave you really shouldn't have a hardware problem. There shouldn't be a problem with the CD ROM and Writer sharing the same cable either unless it's a buffer underrun issue. Does your version of Nero support Windows XP? The "freezing" part sounds like a software issue more than anything else. Try another burning software or visit Nero or Microsoft to see if they have a patch.

Really? It said I couldn't encode 'on the fly' with the CDrom and CDrw on the same iDE channel..

I need to reboot before i can start Nero back up :(

Don't ever record "on the fly". Since CD drives run at different speeds you are risking a chance of buffer underrun and making coasters.

Copy to the hard drive first, then back up to the CD-RW.

OK I rebooted. It's version 5.5.5.6 bundled is what it said. I'll go check the site...well...find it first and d/l the newest one.

kmike-it's a machine she bought from IBM. The CD-ROM was originally set to master, i changed it to slave and put the CD-RW to master. Should I have it the opposite way? jonmcc - thanks for the advice of on the fly..i'll keep that in mind. It keeps freezin up no matter what I do. I just d/l'd CDex and EAC, I'm gonna just try and burn a straight audio CD and see what happens....well, gotta go get the new version first

I don't know where to check for updates at MS.

Nero's website, latest version is 5.5.7.2...do I want that one?

Your configuration is optimal for standard 2 IDE port system.

Installing a PCI IDE card (Promise, etc.) would provide 2 additional IDE ports, allowing up to 4 IDE devices as master on their own dedicated IDE port, and eliminate any need for master/slave configuration.

Hope this helps!
