It almost looks like someone changed your main fonts to wingdings or some similar symbol font. A virus would do that to be a pain in the ass, try getting a AV and scanning your drives.

ya after looking at the pics it looks like your fonts are messed up and maybe it's corrupt? try to run a error-checking on your windows disk drive

have you checked your fonts folder to see if maybe someone deleted them?

You may be able to boot into safe-mode and use AVG there without Windows shutting down due to the RPC shutdown. Make sure you set AVG to scan all files and not just program/executable files.

Do you have another PC that you can temporarily connect your hard drive to as a slave. Do not set it as the master and let Windows attempt to boot.
Scan all files on your drive in another PC and see if it finds any infected files. I've done this before and it's worked well. Quarantine any infected files it finds incase they are used by Windows to boot or operate normally.

why dont you get a virus scanner, that will tell you if you have a virus. I think almost all virus scanners come with a safety disk that will boot your pc and scan without loading windows.

1) turn on the Windows Firewall, aka the Internet Connection Firewall on pre-SP2 versions of WinXP.

2) if the shutdown countdown starts, go to Start > Run and run the command shutdown /a to buy time.

3) uninstall AVG and install a 30-day trial of Kaspersky: http://www.kaspersky.com/trials Right-click the red K on the taskbar, choose Settings, and go down the list and max out every setting in every area. Then right-click the K and do an Update, reboot if prompted to do so, and then right-click the K and choose Scan My Computer.

4) if you don't have one, get a router between your computer and your modem. And keep the Windows Firewall running.

5) patch Windows at Windows Update and patch any Office products (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel) at Office Update.

6) check your system with Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, a free goodie that looks for other misconfigurations.
