Do I have a potential dead CPU?

I spilled isopropyl alcohal on my cpu by accident while cleaning. Before I put it into the mb and find out the truth does anyone know if that would have killed it?
 
My guess is no, but I really don't know. The only reason I replied is because Hennessy is my favorite drink. Mmmm... V.S.O.P. :thumbsup:
 
Thank you. I assumed I would be bc I used it to clean it all the time but I didnt know if I got it wet would it not work anymore. Would just using a compressed can of air help to make sure it's completely dry? It should affect the performance either correct?
 
You can get electronics wet as long as their is no current going through them. They must be 100% dry before you put current through them though.
 
Alcohol is no problem, shake out the excess if any is trapped under the heat spreader. Even 70% alcohol (30% water) is not likely to be do any harm after shaking out the excess if you install it in the board before it is fully dry, the surface tension is too low for it to bead up, it won't significantly conduct electricity.

The bigger issue could be that if the alcohol dissolved heatsink compound or other environmental residue, it could have deposited some of that on other underside of the CPU, fouling the contacts a little bit. Therefore you should inspect the bottom for traces of residue and if any are present, rinse the contacts with alcohol a couple times to clean them off.

I would not advise trying to dry the CPU with compressed air, because high velocity air causing fast dust movement will generate static charges. They are not likely to be of a magnitude that they do any harm, but since there is no need to 100% rapid-dry a CPU after spilling alcohol on it, there is no need for even a slight risk.

UNLESS it's <75% solution, you DUNKED it and there was a lot of dirt and other stuff that got washed up in there. 😉
 
i use alchohol to use the land grid array on the bottom of intel CPUs from time to time when i reseat them, you should be fine so long as it's all evaporated. in the time it took for you to post all this it should be all evaporated anyway
