I just bought my second Barracuda 40GB drive and I think there is a problem. It took almost 1 hour to format (using fdisk) and When I tried to load Win XP, I got the following error:

STOP: c0000221 unknown Hard Error
\system\system32\ntdll.dll

This has happened during all attempts at loading XP on this drive.

My first Barracude did not take 1 hour to format, albiet it did take almost 20 minustes on a P4 1.7ghz intel 850 system. This harddisk is an additional drive on the same system running win 98.

Thanks,
Anurag

It doesn`t sound like a faulty drive. My 40gig Barracuda takes about that long to format from fdisk. The error message from Xp is something i`ve seen before as well. try downloading the boot disc setup from Microsofts site. It makes 6....yes 6 floppys that you need to start up on,
hope this is of some help to you,
D.

I have checked the drive surface using scandisk (thorough checking)...took a reeally long time and found no bad sectors etc.

Hopw does the boot disc setup solve my problem? I tried again and this time it went upto another level and before starting install, it stopped and said "setup cannot continue on this hard disk. HARD DISK CORRUPTED"

I tried installing the same copy on XP Pro (just to check if my XP is bad) on another 40 gb seagate drive (5400 U series) on the same machine and it installed flwalessly.

What gives?????
